Visitors can watch or take part in a wide range of sports throughout the year. Rome has excellent sporting facilities and is also close to the coast, where many water sports are available.

Football is an extremely popular spectator sport in Rome and the city has two top-level teams, Roma and Lazio, which share the Stadio Olimpico. Both clubs have large and loyal followings and there is a strong rivalry between them. The city is close enough to the coast to enjoy the beaches of the Mediterranean sea. Some favourites are Santa Marinella, Castelfusano and Castelporziano.

Cycling is popular in Rome and the city boasts plenty of cycle track, though if you're unfamiliar with the way the locals drive then you should keep your wits about you.

The Rome City Marathon takes place each spring and is something of a 42-km / 26-mile history lesson, as it winds past many of the city's most famous attractions. There are also good facilities for cycling, athletics, horseback riding, tennis, golf and other recreational activities.
